The Prospector Theater is a unique model of social enterprise combining an integrated and competitive job-training program for adults with disabilities with a premium first-run movie theater.

Through a process we call “sparkle mining” we pair Prospects with jobs that are appropriate and fitting. We are firm believers that people do their best when they love their job and do what they love. Being a movie theater gives us a lot of opportunity to use different skills. Each new release creates new opportunities to tap into our Prospects’ sparkle. Prospects help to creatively market upcoming movies by developing artwork, crafts, graphic design, production, embroidery, balloon art, songs, dances, games, puzzles, and specialty food and beverage. Through developing and adapting off-screen attractions and activities, we make movie going a special and memorable experience.

Our long operating hours (sometimes spanning 9 AM – 12 AM) accommodate our diverse workforce. We screen movies during off-peak times, such as weekday mornings, to teach and train Prospects who rely on daytime employment. The structure and repetition of our operation helps to include individuals who may be constrained by transportation or government benefits. We intentionally overstaff to prepare for times of crisis where a Prospect may need individualized attention. Educational training is weaved into the everyday functions of our Theater, meaning that every movie, customer, and interaction is an opportunity to learn and grow.  

Everything we do – teaching, training, awareness, engagement – is achieved through the operation of our movie theater.  Our ushers meet, greet, and dazzle audiences before, during, and after every show. Our landscaping crew beautifies our grounds, shovels snow, and keeps our facilities safe and accessible. Our Prospect Productions team produces our pre-show content. The Prospect baking team creates delicious gourmet popcorn, candy, and baked goods. In turn, we have built standards, operating procedures, measurements, and accountability into our model, helping us learn where we need improvement. We are able to evaluate the effectiveness of our teaching and training by the performance of the theater as a business. Every training opportunity is designed to support our business and mission, helping our Prospects and the Theater to grow.
