Since 1985 CATRA has offered an opportunity for Capital Area residents from all generations with all types of special and typical needs to establish an atmosphere of support, respect, and health in an equestrian farm environment while offering a therapeutic riding experience to those able to benefit from it. CATRA is staffed fully and only by volunteers of all ages and abilities. All family members are actively encouraged to become participating members of CATRA's community. Participation in the program offers opportunities for mutual support, empathy and education in a relaxed, non judgmental environment. In addition to the riding itself, many find that coming together to participate in an athletic activity rather than focusing on the 'disease' or 'dysfunction' is a welcome respite. CATRA also offers opportunities and events well beyond its weekly therapeutic riding program. On an annual basis CATRA registers, prepares, and chaperones special needs riders as well as their horses for participation in the Handicapped Riders Division of the Devon Horse Show (HRD). Locally, the organization produces 3 Equestrian Fun Shows annually. CATRA supports its child and adolescent volunteers' participation in state events including Penn State Agricultural Progress Days and the PA State Farm Show. CATRA works with many local human services agencies and programs offering the opportunity for development of productive employment skills, improvement of socialization abilities and many additional benefits.
