Trying to understand Adrenoleukodystropy and the other disorders associated with it seems nearly impossible when you consider how little is really known. But what is known, is that ALD has been striking families through many generations for a very long time. It is an x-chromosome related genetic defect that affects boys, men and females who are carriers. 

Boys develop normally until the onset of symptoms occurs. Symptoms typically rival those of attention deficit disorder before serious neurological involvement becomes apparent. The symptoms progress rapidly and lead to vegetative state within two years, and death anytime thereafter. Adrenocortical insufficiency, Addison's Disease, is seen in 90 percent of the cases of ALD.
